The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Kybella (deoxycholic acid), a treatment for adults with moderate-to-severe fat below the chin, known as submental fat. Using Kybella for the treatment of fat outside of the submental area is not approved and is not recommended.

KYBELLA® Injections for a Double Chin
KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile.
HOW KYBELLA® WORKS
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

Submental fat, or “double-chin”, represents a cosmetic change in patients in all ages and genders. Interestingly enough, it occurs regardless of body mass. This is because we have localized fat deposits all over our bodies, but because this one is under our chin and is in part of our facial outline, it is exceptionally noticeable.
With age, genetics and weight fluctuation many adults experience their neckline becoming fuller and developing somewhat of a “double chin”. That excess bulge under the chin can be nearly impossible to correct with diet and exercise. This may be due to several factors including changes in weight, age, gravity, and loss of skin’s elasticity.
Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet under treated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
Patient Story: JARRAD
“I didn’t realize I looked that bad until I looked that good.”
Jarrad’s initiation into injectables was memorable, but for the wrong reason. “I was living in Los Angeles at the time and went to a Medi Spa for Botox. I had a wedding to attend and I wanted to look good. Along with a smoother forehead, I got a lazy eye—a complication caused when Botox is put in the wrong muscle.” Jarrad’s mom stepped up to the rescue with advice for the “next time,” giving him a referral to the injector she had used for years—Cindy Nickel. Jarrad has been Cindy’s patient ever since he moved back to Oklahoma City, over 5 years ago. He describes Cindy as being friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible. “Apart from being an amazing practitioner, she is nurturing and genuinely interested in everyone.”
Jarrad started with Botox to the forehead, brow and eye areas. Later, Cindy put a small amount of filler into his chin. “Cindy not only knows facial anatomy, she knows how to approach the male face and keep it looking masculine. I still look like myself, just well rested.”
Recently, Jarrad tried Kybella—the newest FDA approved treatment for a mild to moderate double chin. “The results were so dramatic, I was shocked. After two sessions I went from a 17 to 15 neck. I look 10 years younger (he is 38) and 20 pounds lighter. When I saw the before and after photos I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t realize I looked that bad until I looked that good.”.
For men who are wondering if they should try injectables, Jarrad has some advice: “No question–hands down, do it. I know a lot of guys think it is for women only, but it’s not. You’ve either got to have really good genes, or a really great injector. Cindy is a big part of the confidence I have in my appearance.”
