We all age at different rates, however the aging process is something we all share. Wrinkles and lines begin forming and certain parts of the face start to lose volume–some faster than others. Statistics show a veritable revolution in the number of women (and men) seeking facial rejuvenation through injectables. What are the telltale signs of facial aging? What products are part of an anti-aging strategy? Below Cindy identifies the top 20 areas and describes the techniques she uses to correct and enhance the face and neck.

Products and Applications

What is the difference between neuromodulators and dermal fillers?

Neuromodulators… erase wrinkles, smooth lines, soften, and often create a subtle lift.

Common products: Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®

Dermal Fillers…add volume. Depending upon the product they can build structure, cushion, fill in superficial fine lines, plump lips and rejuvenate eye areas. They are characterized by superficial, medium and deep applications. They all have slightly different compounds and consistencies and are designed to be injected at various depths within your skin. In many cases, a combination of two or more dermal filler brands applied to different areas will be most effective for optimal facial rejuvenation.

Common products: Radiesse®, Sculptra®, Juvederm Voluma®, Juvederm Volbella®, Juvederm Ultra® and Juvederm Ultra Plus®, Restylane®, Restylane Lyft®, Restylane Silk®

Other: Kybella®—treatment for correcting a mild to moderate double chin

Hyaluronic Acids

Juvederm Voluma®–one of the newest, deeper filler, Juvederm Voluma® is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area, counteracting age-related midface volume loss. Placed correctly, it can also benefit the jawline, recessed chin, temples and nasal labial folds. Its hallmark is building structure in addition to filling, providing an immediate change in appearance that lasts up to 2 years.

Juvederm Volbella®–a new addition to the Juvederm® family of products. Volbella® is a superficial filler (think “frosting”) with the consistency of soft gel. It is FDA approved for lips and lip lines, giving lips proper filling without unnatural projection. It can eradicate lip lines, fine lines on cheeks and “necklace” lines on the neck. Treatments last approximately 1 year.

Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus®-intended for deeper nasolabial folds, mid cheek, marionette lines. It corrects more severe facial wrinkles and folds and fills in depressed areas of the cheeks, reshaping facial contours. It can also be used for hand rejuvenation. Its longevity is dependent upon the area injected, but generally lasts 1-1.5 years.

Restylane® –is for mid-to-deep injection into the facial tissue for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. This hyaluronic acid filler can also lift the brows and corners of the mouth. Results last 1 year.

Restylane® Lyft–considered when structure and support is indicated. It is intended for deep implantation into the facial tissue for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and for cheek augmentation and for the correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies. Can also mitigate a recessed chin. Usually lasts 1 year or longer.

Restylane® Silk-– is for lip augmentation and for correction of lip lines. Lasts 9 months to 1 year.

Types of fillers and what they do…

Collagen Stimulators

Radiesse®–provides an instant lift by restoring lost volume in areas of the lower face with the exception of the mouth and lips. Also a good choice for hand rejuvenation. Particularly good for thicker skin or deeper folds because of its firmer consistency. It continues to benefit the body, stimulating the natural production of collagen for a more refreshed appearance. Can last 9 months to over a year.

Sculptra®–is categorized as a collagen stimulator. It is used to diminish facial wrinkles by restoring the deep underlying structure of the skin. Used primarily in the mid cheek and jawline. Results appear gradually over several treatments and can last up to 2 years.

Fat Eliminator

Kybella®— recently approved by the FDA, Kybella® is a new, non-surgical injectable that destroys fat cells creating fullness beneath the chin and around the neck. Dramatically improved profiles and tightened skin have often resulted after 2 to 3 sessions. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found naturally in our bodies. Its function is to absorb water, deliver nutrients and act as a cushioning agent. Synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid have been developed and used to correct disorders in the fields of rheumatology, ophthalmology, wound repair and facial rejuvenation. Common products used for cosmetic enhancement include Restylane®, Juvederm®, Belotero®, Perlane® and Prevelle®. When injected into the skin, it acts like a sponge and expands to fill in wrinkles and folds and support areas of volume loss. These injections also induce and stimulate collagen, which further firms and plumps the skin over time. They have a gel-like consistency that acts like an inflated cushion supporting facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging.

One of the unique characteristics of hyaluronic acids is that they can be reversed with the injection of an antidote called Hyaluronidase. This soluble enzyme acts locally at the site of placement via injection to break down the hyaluronic acid filler.

Fillers and injectables demand not only a thorough knowledge of anatomy, but a true sense of artistry. I’ve always been fascinated by both the clinical and creative aspects of facial rejuvenation.
